Can You Change Your Mindset?

What is the single biggest challenge you are struggling with right now?

  • Do you have a limiting belief that is holding you back from acting and getting the results of the success you know you deserve?

I held myself back for years with my limiting beliefs.

About 9 years ago, I was stuck and fed up with the endless cycle of yo-yo dieting, starting, falling off track, and getting nowhere fast. I tried every method, every therapy, and read every book on the subject, but nothing worked until I discovered the life-altering truth:

But that’s all just words. The real value I can bring is conquering my own mindset!

So how do you conquer your mindset you may be thinking?

 Let’s explore this further here…

Firstly -What is a mindset?

In decision theory and general systems theory, a mindset is a series of self-perceptions or beliefs people hold about themselves.

These determine behaviour, outlook and mental attitude. It refers to whether you believe certain qualities are fixed or changeable traits.

To put it simply:

  • Your mindset is your collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape your thought habits.
  • And your thought habits affect how you think, what you feel, and what you do.

– In the words of Henry Stanley Haskins: Our mindset shapes what lies behind us, before us, and within us.

Why Mindsets Matter

Developing a powerful mindset and helpful thinking patterns are the essential foundations to becoming the Master of Your own life!

According to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, it is your mindset that plays a significant role in determining your achievement and success in life.

And your mindset plays a critical role in how you cope with life’s challenges.

Your mindset is so powerful it can keep you stuck.

Your mindset is a big deal because what you believe about yourself and your ability has an impact on your success.

The Two Types of Mindsets

Two mindsets have been identified by Carol Dweck, (Professor of Psychology at Stanford University)- a fixed mindset and a growth mindset :

  • People with a fixed mindsetbelieve that these qualities are inborn, fixed, and unchangeable.
  • Those with a growth mindset, on the other hand, believe that these abilities can be developed and strengthened by way of commitment and hard work.

Dweck notes that having a growth mindset doesn’t involve believing that anyone can become anything they want with enough education and effort. Not everyone can become Einstein or Mozart just because they try.

What is a growth mindset?

The growth mindset is about living up to one’s possible potential.

A growth mindset is the belief that your capacities are not fixed but can be developed over time, Brains and talent are just the starting point.” (Dweck, 2006)

People with a growth mindset believe that the effort that goes into learning and deepening one’s understanding and talents is well worth all the toil and trouble.

Why is a growth mindset such a big deal?

  • Because it enables you to unleash your potential.

What is a fixed mindset?

A Fixed Mindset is where you believe traits such as intelligence or talent are seen as fixed traits, set at birth.

A person with a fixed mindset lets failure or success define them. Through this fixed mindset, a lot of time is spent by the person documenting their talents and less time working on developing them.

Those with a fixed mindset will describe themselves as either ‘dumb’ or ‘smart’ with no way to change this-shying away from challenges. When faced with failure or a different challenge, they will tell themselves and others, ‘they can’t do it’ or will make excuses to rationalise the failure (E.g. ‘I didn’t pass the test as I was too busy doing my homework for another subject’).

Beliefs and Mindset

The most challenging part in making a change isn’t about getting your body in shape: It’s about getting your mind in shape”– Irena Geller

People are capable of changing their mindsets BY changing their thinking and limiting beliefs.

What Are Limiting Beliefs?

  • Limiting beliefs are those which constrain and limit us from reaching our potential us in some way.
  • Just by believing them, we do not think, do or say the things that they inhibit. And in doing so we impoverish our lives.

Here are Some Examples of Limiting Beliefs:

Limiting beliefs about good health:

  • Getting sick is unavoidable.
  • Everyone else in my family is overweight.

Limiting beliefs about self -worth:

  • That’s just my luck!!
  • Things just don’t work out for me.

And here is a 4 Step-Process to Get Rid of Limiting Beliefs.

Step #1 – Recognize That the Belief Is Irrational

The First step is to become aware and consider what the belief is that is limiting you.

 Try asking yourself this question:

  • Is it rational -does it make sense when I look at it with a clear mind?

Step #2 – Dispute It

Take time to reflect on this and recognize the full extent of the belief, how false it really is and especially how it has limited you in the past.

And ask yourself WHY you think you can’t do something.

  Try asking yourself these questions:

  • Do I have any evidence to back up this statement?
  • Is this belief really that accurate?

Step #3 – Come up with a new EFFECTIVE BELIEF.

Try asking yourself these questions:

  • Is there a more balanced way of thinking about this?
  • What’s the exact opposite way of thinking about this belief?

Step #4 – Start As “If”

A good start point for many beliefs is to act as if the belief were true. Just pretend you are an actor and are going through the motions.

 Try asking yourself this question:

  • What would this person believe about themselves?

I believe that the key to sustainable change is through the mind!

 And lastly….

If you were able to address your limiting beliefs and get the results of the success you know you deserve in life?

  • What would that mean to you?

Please let me know in the comments, I’d love to hear your story.
